Emily | FCHS | 2017 – Charlottesville Senior Portraits

Tonight on my blog we have Emily, one of my senior spokesmodels from Fluvanna County High School’s Class of 2017. As a photographer, I always love to try new things so when Emily suggested taking a few photos on her trampoline, I jumped at the chance! 🙂 Okay, not literally…I left that up to Emily. How she managed to jump up so high and still look gorgeous is beyond me but she did it! Next we moved on to take a few shots in her yard. The leaves were at their peak and made a fantastic backdrop! To make matters better, Emily’s mom brought out an antique chair that belonged to her grandmother. What a brilliant idea Liz! It’s a really great way to add a personal element to the photos!

Our next stop was the downtown Palmyra Area. Those of you that follow me know that I use this location a lot. You’d think I’d get bored of it but I never do! Its a pretty small area that I stick to, not even a quarter of a mile long. In this tiny space though, I can get a ton of different looks out of a session! I really try to make every sessions different  so everyone will have their own unique gallery of images. We finished up the session with a silhouette shot (it’s been forever since I took one of those!) and a few sunset shots. Emily you are such a sweetheart and I absolutely love photographing you! I had the best time with you and  I can’t wait for the next session!

Tonight on my blog we have Lindsay, one of my senior spokesmodels from Fluvanna County High School’s Class of 2017. We had her session in downtown Palmyra one day after school. I’ve used this location many times in the past and I really love it! Within this small area, I can get so many different looks out of a session and since there are so many great spots,  I can make every session look different! I really try not to make two sessions look the same so everyone will have their own unique gallery of images.

I have the best time hanging out Lindsay and her mother Judi …they are so much fun to be around!  Lindsay is such a happy person, it seems like she’s always smiling! Of course if I had those awesome dimples, I think I’d smile all the time too! When she put on her black dress and was standing in the field of winter grass, the scene really seemed to call for a more somber expression. Lindsay pulled it off perfectly! These photos are a little darker than my normal style and I am so happy with the results! Thanks for another fabulous afternoon Lindsay & Judi…I can’t wait for the next session!

Beyonce Icon Session | Charlottesville Senior Photographer

Beyonce Icon Session | Gabby | LCHS

Every year, I try to come up with an interesting photography concept for my senior spokesmodels. Last year we had color inspired sessions and I was thrilled with the way they turned out! This year I decided to do something different with my 2017 senior models. Each one of them chose a different icon and through out the year, we’ve had sessions based on their icon. We picked photos of that icon and used them as inspiration for our photoshoots. With outfit choices, accessories and hair and make-up we hope to capture the essence of the icon!

I’ve already photographed Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and several others. You should check out the whole list because I am in love with the results! I had to take a break from the icon sessions because my fall was so busy with outdoor senior sessions. Today though, I’m happy to share the ninth one from the icon series, and it’s a biggie…Beyonce!

Gabby, my senior models from Louisa County High School, immediately knew she wanted to be Beyonce. It was perfect timing because she was just releasing her new album Lemonade.  We drew a lot of our inspiration from videos from that and other albums. Here are some of the photos we added to our Pinterest board:

It’s so much fun planning these icon sessions. Especially with someone that’s known around the world for her style like Beyonce! With clothing, props, and the help of Mary & Sydney (the incredible hair & makeup artists I work with), we were able to transform Gabby into a few of the many different  looks of Beyonce!

For the first look, we added clip in extensions so Gabby could have the long braids that Beyonce is know for in her Formation video. With the hat, outfit and jewelry, we totally nailed this look!

Gabby you look absolutely incredible!! I’m in love with this look!

beyonce icon sesssionbeyonce_icon-session

You probably recognize this next look that we copied…it’s from Beyonce’s Single Ladies video. Since Gabby is a dancer, this part was a breeze for her!Mary added the extensions and we were ready to go!

We pulled Gabby’s hair back into a ponytail and quickly recreated these shots. I love how Gabby looks so beautiful and confident!

Another quick outfit change and we took some close up beauty style shots. I can not get over how amazing your eyes are Gabby!

beyonce_icon-session

This instantly became a favorite of mine! I don’t remember what I said to get this expression but it’s too cute!

beyonce_icon-sessionbeyonce_icon-session

For the last look of the night, we wanted to recreate Beyonce’s yellow dress in her Hold Up video. This was a super popular video and inspired tons of people to dress like it for Halloween. This became a bit of a problem because we couldn’t fine a dress like it anywhere! It was either sold out or was very expensive. We improvised and got a dress that was at least the same color!

beyonce_icon-session

It was very difficult getting Gabby’s super dark hair to blend in with blonde hair extensions that I bought. It was hysterical to watch Mary try though! 🙂 Finally we decided that Gabby would be Beyonce with reddish brown hair!

beyonce_icon-session

It may not be the look we were originally thinking but Gabby looks amazing!! She reminds me of a Greek goddess!

beyonce_icon-session

Thanks so much for a wonderful afternoon Gabby. I always have so much fun with you and have loved having you as a senior model!

Stay tuned for the more icon sessions through out the school year. I have Melanie Martinez, Selena Gomez & Kate Hudson coming up in the next few weeks!

Janis Joplin Icon Session | Savannah | FCHS

This year I decided to do something different with my 2017 senior models. Each one of them chose a different icon and through out the year, we’ve had sessions based on their icon. I had to take a break from the icon sessions because my fall was so busy with outdoor senior sessions. Today though, I’m happy to share the eighth one from the icon series…Janis Joplin!

When Savannah, one of my senior models from Fluvanna County High School (and my photography assistant), selected Janis Joplin, I was happy but not surprised. Savannah’s style is so laid back and casual, I knew there was no way she’d pick and icon that was into fancy clothes and tons of make-up.

We made a Pinterest board with the Janis photos that we liked and then we selected outfits and poses based on that. Here are some of the photos we used for inspiration:

Savannah had it pretty easy because she didn’t have to spend hours getting her hair and makeup done. Since Janis was known for her wild untamed hair though, Savannah’s glossy shoulder length hair just wouldn’t do! I bought some clip in extensions and it took a while for me to figure out how to put them in her hair. Then I had to trim them…not an easy feat! Mary (the amazing hairy stylist I usually work with) would have laughed herself silly watching me hack away at those darn things!

Once I finally finished with Savanna’s hair, we were ready to start! Most of the photos we used for inspiration included feathers in her hair and bohemian outfits but we did find a few with a more subdued look so we started with those.  We put on some Janis music and Savannah started moving to the music!

Janis_Joplin_Icon_SessionJanis_Joplin_Icon_Session

When thinking about Janis Joplin, this is probably the look that most people remember. Tons of colorful feathers and boas in her hair and her signature round sunglasses. We added a bunch of bracelets and necklaces and Savannah made the perfect Janis!

Janis_Joplin_Icon_SessionIt did take a while for me to figure out how to put the extensions in her hair. Janis_Joplin_Icon_Session

Though Janis wore her glasses most of the time, I had to take a few without them so we could see Savanna’s gorgeous blue eyes!

It did take a while for me to figure out how to put the extensions in her hair.

Savannah switched up her vest and changed the necklaces and we moved on to our version of the photo on the cover of Janis’s album Pearl. It came out in 1971 and Savannah sure does look the part!

Janis_Joplin_Icon_SessionJanis_Joplin_Icon_Session

Another thing Janis wore a lot was her big furry hat. I was able to find one that worked perfectly! Savannah, you are absolutely adorable!!

For the last photos of the session, I wanted then to have more of a modern feel while still capturing the hippy/bohemian vibe.

After removing the feathers, and changing Savanna’s necklace, she almost looked like she was from this decade! 🙂

An icon session from the 60’s wouldn’t be complete with out Janis flashing the peace sign!

Thanks so much for a wonderful afternoon Savannah. I had so much fun with you and loved watching you turn into Janis!!! Stay tuned for the more icon sessions through out the school year. I have Beyonce, Melanie Martinez & Selena Gomez coming up in the next few weeks!

Lana Del Rey Icon Session | Charlottesville Senior Photographer

Lana Del Rey Icon Session | Sadie | MHS

Every year, I try to come up with an interesting photography concept for my senior spokesmodels. Last year we had color inspired sessions and I was thrilled with the way they turned out! This year I had each senior model choose a different icon and through out the year, we’ve had sessions based on their icon.

I’ve already photographed Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and several others. You should check out the whole list because I am in love with the results! I had to take a break from the icon sessions because my fall was so busy with outdoor senior sessions. With the new year I started back up and today, I’m happy to share the seventh one from the series…a Lana Del Rey icon session!

I was really excited when Sadie, my senior model from Monticello High School, choose Lana Del Rey as her icon. She may not be as well-known as some of the other icons, but to those that know and love her, she is amazing!! Her style is so unique to her and I knew that it would be an amazing session!

Here are some of the photos from Pinterest that we used for inspiration:

Lana Del Rey icon session

It was pretty easy to turn Sadie into Lana Del Rey. Well I guess I shouldn’t say that because I didn’t do anything to make it happen! It’s all thanks to Mary & Sydney (the incredible hair & makeup artists I work with). All I had to do was sit back and watch them work their magic. This was one of the first shots I took and Sadie hit it straight out of the park!

Lana Del Rey icon sessionLana Del Rey icon session

Oh my gosh Sadie…this is absolutely perfection! I love everything about it!

Lana Del Rey icon session

Lana Del Rey has been photographed by some of the biggest fashion photographers in the world so copying some of the photos was a little tricky. It’s not like I have fur coats and antique Victorian chairs just lying around. Not to mention the photos were shot in a castle in Toronto! We improvised with a fur wrap and some old fabric I had and I think the photos turned out perfectly!

Lana Del Rey icon sessionLana Del Rey icon session

Another big thanks to Mary for writing Paradise on Sadie’s hand…it looks perfect! Sadie I am completely blown away by these photos, you look unbelievably regal and elegant!

Lana Del Rey icon sessionLana Del Rey icon session

Since we aren’t anywhere near a beach, we had to improvise the background with this series of photos. They were both shot outside but I think the backdrop we used was did an excellent job of faking the clouds! 🙂 I hardly notice the background anyway because I can’t take my eyes off of Sadie!

Since it was pretty cold outside so we had to keep it quick with these photos. Even still, poor Sadie was freezing! You’d never know it though. That’s the sign of a true model. Looking poised and gorgeous regardless of the circumstances!

Last shots of the day and another pretty good job of recreating the inspiration photos. It’s crazy hard to choose but these might be my favorites. Sadie, you belong on the cover of a fashion magazine!

Thanks so much for a wonderful afternoon Sadie, you captured the complete essence of Lana Del Rey! Stay tuned for more icon sessions throughout the school year. I have Beyonce, Janis Joplin & Melanie Martinez coming up in the next few weeks!
